Welcome to the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures
At Lafayette College students can major in French, German or Spanish. The Foreign Languages & Literatures Department also offers minors in Russian, comparative literature, classical languages and literatures, and classical civilizations. Students may also take courses in Mandarin Chinese, Classical Greek, Modern Hebrew, Japanese and Latin. The language curriculum is designed to help students develop linguistic proficiency and cultural competency in their areas of study. In advanced courses, students gain an understanding of the literature, politics, history and cultures of the world regions in which these languages are spoken.
A series of interdisciplinary programs and coordinate majors are also available, including International Affairs (IA), International Studies & Engineering and International Economics and Commerce. Furthermore, foreign language faculty contribute to Asian Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS), Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies (MREMS), Jewish Studies, Russian and East European Studies (REES) and Women’s and Gender Studies.
